Veszprém – Jezsuita templom
Történeti leírás
Historical description 1701-1945
The Jesuits obtained the building site of a former monastery here in 1625 and began the construction of a church in 1747. The construction of the church had not been completed when the Jesuit order was dissolved in 1773. The building was never consecrated. Subsequently, the building started to deteriorate, the roof and vaulting collapsed, and trees sprouted inside.
Historical description 1945-
The building was covered with a protective roof in the 1960s. The vaulting was reconstructed and the roof was renovated in the early 2000s. External and internal rehabilitation took place in 2011-12, with the ruined interior conserved by restoration experts. The walls were researched in 2002.

The main façade has an undulating ground plan, and the central axis protrudes with a slight curve. The enclosed stone portal is framed with pilasters and a broken pediment, over which there is a semicircular niche with a narrow violin-shaped window at the top of the niche. The unknown original plan probably included a central tower on the façade, and a wooden tower may have been constructed. The apse on the west terminates in three sides of a pentagon. The external side façades are divided by pairs of pilasters with flat surfaces and are cornice-like capitals, and have three semicircular arched windows on each side. The division of the apse with pilasters follows the plan of the pentagon, and the elements are angled on the corners. The nave consists of three bays divided by slender pairs of pilasters with highly protruding composite capitals, above which there are twin transverse arches. The bays are covered with surbased sail vaults. A gallery was planned for the section right behind the entrance but it was not built. Read less
